- I am a National Literacy Trust Reading Champion, recognised for my work with children and adults, particularly boys and men in creating a reading culture (see the 'Case Study / Getting the Blokes on Board' link in the sidebar to the left). - As a children's non-fiction author you will find that my visit is
very different from that of a fiction author or a poet.
- I offer a variety of sessions, suitable for R, KS1, KS2, and KS3.
- In my talk session (Y3 to Y9) I outline the journey of a non-fiction book, from first ideas to printed pages. Who does what, when, how, and why. Everyone will learn something new.
- In my workshop session (Y5 to Y9) children act out the roles of key people in the publishing process to create their own non-fiction books. Everyone will do something new. It's all about co-operative learning and teamwork.
- For younger children (R, Y1, Y2), where attention spans are shorter, I offer age- and interest-related readings.
- My visits are inspirational, motivational, and fun. To quote from a Y6 child: "I was having so much fun, I didn't realise I was learning anything, but I was."
- I am experienced at working with children of all abilities, including SEN,
MLD, and G&T.
- I am CRB cleared, with an Enhanced Disclosure certificate.
- I have Public Liability insurance cover for visits to schools in connection
with my work.
Please note: A teacher or teaching assistant employed by the school has to be with me at all times otherwise I am not covered for Public Liability insurance - that's what it says on the policy.
