The Very Sleepy Pig

Reception and Y1:
Fiction reading

Overview
In this session I read my picture-book farmyard story The Very Sleepy Pig. Children join in, and there's a fun surprise at the end of the reading. Plenty of opportunities for follow-up activities – recounts, predicting and storyboarding.

Learning objectives
Listening and responding, predicting.

Size of group
Works best with a small group – ideally fewer than 30.

Duration
About 30 – 40 minutes.

Location
Classroom.

Ideas for follow-up activities

  • Independent work: Retell the story in words and pictures.
  • Role-play: Re-enact the story using children's own words.
  • Discussion: What happens next to Sleepy Pig? (The story ends at the start of his day – what does he do next?)
